Ereader- Kindle 1st generation
Offered by: Amazon.com
Paw Prints: 4
The Kindle is an Ereader that was initially brought to my attention by my husband as a possible way to save some room from my over 500 books in print. If you are like me and laugh at the thought of an Ereader, thinking that it is similar to reading on the computer, think again. The Kindle is as advertised. It is very similar to reading a real book, but without all the hassles.
Let me give you some examples of why a Kindle may be beneficial for you:
Do you travel a lot and are tired of worrying about how much weight your reading material will add?
Are you tired of having to stop reading, or trying to figure out how to hold your place without the book closing, while cooking or doing some other chore?
Do you worry about missing out on a new release while you travel?
Tired of the mess that ALL of your books make, or running out of room?
If you answered yes to one (or like me all) of the questions above then you may want to look into the Kindle.
The Pros of a Kindle:
1) Size and weight. It is small enough to take anywhere, and light enough that it is negligible.
2) Relatively durable, but like any electronic you must be somewhat careful.
3) Comes with a cover, which is easy to put on.
4) You can download new books through the USB port OR wirelessly directly onto the kindle from Amazon.com without a computer!
5) Has an internet feature.
6) It has Wikipedia and a dictionary feature.
7) Has buttons on right and left hand sides to “turn” pages. Tired of pesky paper cuts? This is the way to go!
8) No losing your place. Even if you leave the book you are reading to read something else when you return to that book you start where you left off!
9) It has an SD slot! You can use up to an 8 gig SD card to open up the amount of space on your Kindle! That equates to an entire library of books!
10) Do you have an iPod Touch or Iphone? There’s an app for the Kindle! Keep up with your reads on those as well!
11) There are 6 different font sizes! Can’t read that itty bitty print? Then make it larger! You can do this WHILE you are in a book as well!
12) You can share books with other Kindles on your account! You can have up to 5 Kindles on one account, and they all have access to all of the books purchased for that account!
13) The customer service OUTSTANDING! I have never once had a bad experience with Amazon’s customer care!
The Cons of a Kindle:
1) The price. It is a bit high ended on the price of the device, but the price of the books is very reasonable and there are a lot of free reads. But because of the price I would suggest it just for an adult or upper teen who is VERY responsible.
2) The Kindle uses Sprint for its wireless service. It does not cover the amount of area that other carriers, say ATT, do and limit the wireless ability. This is something that I have looked into and can say with certainty.
3) Inability to share with Kindles NOT on your account. I think that would be beneficial, much like paperback owners sharing their books.
4) Inability to put PDF formats directly on the Kindle 1st gen like you can on gen 2. You must convert them, although this is a free Download and simple to do.
5) Can’t categorize series in order. You can categorize by author but not the individual series.
The cons took some hard thinking.
Honestly, although I have not played with a Nook yet, I truly love the Kindle’s variability when it comes to uploading the books! I have had my Kindle since they first came available, and it is still going strong! You can find Kindle 1st gens on EBay and occassionally on Amazon in their Warehouse Deals. I will have reviews up for the Kindle 2, DX, Nook, and any other Ereaders that come HowlingGoodBooks way as they become available! All to help you decide on what is best for your lifestyle and pocketbook!
