Elis, the daughter of a wealthy merchant hates the society’s traditions she is living under. She loves the empire, but the restrictions are too much for her to bear. In the Hall of Oinrin-Laurel she will take part in the Ceremony of Adulthood and proclaim her fate for the Great Book of the Temple. Now is her chance to changes things up. But will find what she truly wants?
Alric, a bookbinder’s son, goes into the Ceremony of Adulthood to choose his fate as a soldier. He isn’t as strong as most, but his wit and skill will take him far. But is this his true fate?
In a culture where women could only marry into higher castes, males rule and bloodlust conquers the human race, everyone is culturally conditioned to accept them. But two peoples fates will entwine and threaten those traditions. One accepting his fate and the other determined to make something more of herself. But will they survive long enough to discover themselves?
I enjoyed this novella. It had a great plot, two totally opposite characters and a twist for an ending. Elis is a spunky, independent woman! Alric is a very cunning character that I both loathed and loved at the same time. He had a different feel than other main male characters I usually read about. Though I wish there was more meat to the story; it is a great one-sitter, with a great moral.
